Removing Ubuntu overlay scrollbar

Sometimes, one’s taste is someone’s distaste. Although Ubuntu seems to cater for the masses, there will be some who stray (not too much, just a bit) away from the general crowd. Starting with 11.04, Ubuntu comes with a new scrollbar. An overlayed scrollbar that’s thin and almost hidden until you poke it. There’s also this extra icons that I feel is not for me i.e. email icon and instant messaging icon. So here’s how you put this little annoyances behind you.

Removing overlay scrollbar

  1. Open Ubuntu Software Center
  2. Search for “overlay-scrollbar”
  3. Select on the result and click the Remove button
  4. It will ask if you want to remove “liboverlay-scrollbar-0.1-0″ as well. Select Yes.

Removing email and IM icon from GNOME Panel

  1. Open Ubuntu Software Center
  2. Search for “indicator-messages” for email icon and/or “indicator-me” for IM icon
